Smith Optics and the Aleck Crash Detection Sensor

Smith Optics have teamed up with the electronics brand Aleck to put a crash detection system in your helmet and release four new helmets in limited colours.

What is it?

Fitted to the MIPS-equipped Forefront 2, Trace, Payroll and the Triad helmets. The Aleck crash detection sensor is a small device replacing the winder at the back of the helmet.

The system features real-time crash detection which Aleck says measures up to 200 times the force of gravity and the ability to discern between real crashes and false positives. It's USB C rechargeable, advertising a battery life of two weeks and features an IP67 dust and water resistance rating.

How does it work?

In essense this sensor linked is to the app, upon detecting an impact on the head it sends an alert and location data to your emergency contacts.

Upon impact, the device links with your phone and the app alerts you that it's about to send the SOS to your contact, you then have 30 seconds where you can cancel the alert if you dropped your helmet. If you're knocked out or unable to respond it'll tell your emergency contact that you need help and tell them where you are. It can also send alerts to people in the area with the app if you want it to.

Why do I need it?

Should you ride on your own if you're hitting bigger stuff in remote places? Probably not but we still do it.

This system doesn't replace other risk management systems and will need access to GPS and your phone to work but if you've ever been shouted out by your family for not letting them know where you are then you'll benefit from this.
