It’s new bike day, either you’re waiting for it to turn up, or you already have it in your front room.
Whether you’re a seasoned rider wanting a reminder or a new cyclist who needs some help, we are here to support you. In that vein, we’ve written a few guides to get you started. It’s not meant to be a comprehensive guide, just to get you moving and comfortable on your new bike.
Remember, though we've tried to be as comprehensive as possible in the build, please note that some of the assembly is up to you, if you are in any way unsure then give us a call or run your bike into your local workshop for help.
As always if you need any further help, give us a call or an email on the contact form which you can find here and one of our team will be happy to help.
In this article, we'll go over the basics and link you to our list of setup guides and articles to help you get moving on your new bike. You can find those at the bottom of the page.
Starting at the top, when we've got your order it'll be booked in for a build and set up in our workshop. It then goes through a PDI or pre-delivery inspection process.
You can find that information here.
Step One: Start off with the box. To keep our use of plastics down you'll find some large metal staples in the top of the box. These can be quite sharp so we'd always recommend removing them before you start rooting around in the box so prevent you from scratching yourself or your new paintwork.
Step Two: Open your box. You'll find a bike, a wheel and usually a small box of parts. Some bikes will have the seatpost removed so it fits in the box but it's normally on the bike. If it's not in the frame: Insert the seatpost into the seat tube of the bike ensuring insertion to at least the minimum insertion mark on the seat post and tighten to the recommended torque setting. If the seat clamp is quick release then use the lever to clamp (you only need to use your hand with no extra force). The seatpost will already be slightly greased to make insertion easier.
Rip the sides of the box or pull out the bike, and take care with low ceilings and bad backs.
Some bikes with dropper seat posts should not be lifted by the saddle when the post is down. Doing this can burp the cartridge and stop the post from working correctly.
Place the bike down against a sturdy surface and start removing the packaging. Take care not to use a knife or anything that can damage the frame or yourself.
Step Three: Fit your front wheel. make sure to remove the little brake spacers and don't pull the brake lever before the rotor is in!
Step Four: Fit your handlebars. We remove the bars from the stem for packaging. Using a hex key, remove the stem face plate. Put the handlebars into position centrally. Re-tighten the stem face plates. It is important to tighten each bolt equally by hand and to the recommended torque. If you have a quill stem: First check the forks face forward (check rim brakes are at the front, or disc brake on the opposite side to the chain). Slide the bar and stem assembly into the headtube before fully tightening the bolt on top of the stem with a hex key. Check the handlebars rotate freely without interruption from the cables.
Step Five: Fit your pedals: (Make sure you get your left and right the right way around)
Step Six: Give the bike a check over and give it a bounce and roll around making sure everything moves that should move and anything that shouldn't doesn't.
