No more total power than the SLX 4 piston brakes I had on before, but the control they offer is far superior... rather than on or off feel of shimano brakes , Hope Tech 4 E4 have power and modulation , feel so good to use , look amazing , built to last ,serviceable ... broke a lever blade on old slx brakes , had to replace the whole lever ... you get any parts for hope brakes... unbeatable

5-star brake performance: Coming from 2 piston Shimano XTR brakes on my XC bike, the Tech 4 E 4 brakes I put on my trail/enduro bike self build are a whole new world. I used F: 200m / R: 180m Hope Floating rotors and arguably the bike is over-braked. However, the ease of brake power modulation that Hope is famous for is well deserved, so even though I have insanely powerful brakes with very good initial bite, I have enough control to prevent unwanted lockups. Add to that the solid build quality, a wide range of adjustability, a lower weight that SRAM Code RSC. and a lever feel that I really like (some have said it's a bit angular, but I wear gloves all the time so not an issue) and I can already see why these brakes have a strong fan club. I'd definitely recommend them for anything other than XC or light trail use, where they'd be too much.
All of that said, I have taken a star off due to the painful set up process. The "mini" brake bleed /fluid reservoir top-up needed after installation wasn't the issue. I went through the process about three times with each brake, but it was pretty quick and easy and I got a really solid brake feel. The problem was sticking pistons in the calipers. Between them, the two new E4 calipers had three pistons stuck in the caliper body, and the rest did not retract fully, causing very substantial brake pad rub. Once I had forced the stuck pistons out, it took 5+ rounds of careful lube application with a cotton bud to get all the…

These were a serious upgrade over the Sram DB5's I had before. The build quality is unreal. They are easy to install and once set up and they are feel unlike anything else. Super smooth, Loads of feedback and lets face it, they look sick!
